A three carat laboratory-grown diamond has no single price, and the grades determine it far more than the weight does. Two stones both at 3.00ct can differ substantially.
What is different about pricing at this weight in laboratory-grown material is that the grade combination is genuinely open. In natural stone, reaching three carats usually means making choices about colour and clarity; here it does not have to. The sensible advice is therefore straightforward: do not use the pricing to buy a bigger stone with weaker grades. Use it to buy three carats properly specified.
A laboratory-grown diamond is a real diamond — the same crystal structure, hardness and optical properties as a mined stone, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories — with its origin stated explicitly on the report and the invoice.
Price ranges and what changes the price

How carat, cut, colour and clarity affect cost
The four characteristics are graded on the scales in GIA’s grading methodology, with report types described in GIA’s guide to report types. At this specification each behaves in a particular way.
Carat
Price per carat rises with size in laboratory-grown material as it does in natural, and prices step at round weights in both. A stone at 2.95ct is indistinguishable on the hand and sits below the 3.00ct step — worth asking about if the exact number is not the point for you.
Cut
At 3 carats cut quality determines whether the diamond looks alive. A large stone returns or leaks a large quantity of light, and a poorly proportioned one looks flat and watery in a way no amount of size compensates for. Insist on the cut grade on round brilliants; on fancy shapes, where no overall cut grade is issued, assess the face-up light pattern in person.
Colour
Body colour scales with size. At this weight there is a great deal of material for light to pass through, and tint that would be invisible in a small stone becomes apparent. This is the grade where large-stone buyers most often need to specify further up the scale than their previous purchases would suggest, particularly for a white metal setting.
Clarity
The table of a stone this size is physically wide, which gives an inclusion considerable room to be seen. Ask for the plot and check where the inclusions sit, not only what the grade letter says — position relative to the table and the prongs matters as much as the grade at this weight.
Natural vs lab-grown price differences where relevant

At three carats the gap between the two markets is at its widest, because natural rough of this size with good grades is genuinely scarce while laboratory-grown material at this weight is not. Setting, metal and design costs
A three carat stone needs a mount engineered for it. The cost drivers:
- Metal type and mass. Platinum is denser than gold, so an identical design needs more of it by weight. 18ct contains more gold than 9ct.
- Accent stones. Halo, pavé and channel designs add many small diamonds, each hand-set.
- Bench hours. A plain solitaire is the leanest build; engraving, milgrain and bespoke geometry all add time.
- Finger size — a larger shank uses more metal, a small but real factor.
Ask specifically whether the stone received post-growth HPHT processing to improve colour. This is common in CVD material, it is permanent, it is not a fault — and it is a material fact that must be disclosed on the report. It is also a fair subject for a question about price.
What a dated quote should contain
Because we price from live availability rather than a fixed catalogue, a quote is a snapshot rather than a standing figure. A useful one identifies the exact stone: carat weight to two decimal places, the millimetre measurements, all four grades, the issuing laboratory and report number, treatment status, fluorescence and origin. It should also separate the stone from the mount, so you can see what each is costing.
If a quote gives you one figure and a carat weight, ask for it to be broken down. Two stones that both answer to the same carat weight can differ substantially, and a quote that does not identify which stone it refers to cannot be compared with anything.
Ask that the stone be laser-inscribed with both the report number and a note of its laboratory-grown origin, and that origin appear on the invoice as well as the report.
How to compare quotes without comparing unlike-for-like
Nearly every unexplained price gap between two quotes is a specification gap. Line these up before concluding one is expensive:
- Origin — natural or laboratory-grown, stated explicitly rather than implied.
- All four grades, not just the carat weight. A quote giving only weight cannot be compared with anything.
- The issuing laboratory and report type — identical letters from different laboratories do not mean the same thing or carry the same price.
- Millimetre measurements — a deep-cut stone looks smaller for the same weight.
- Treatment status and fluorescence — both appear on the report and both move the price.
- What the quote includes — sizing, the report itself, an insurance valuation, any aftercare.
- The date of the quote, since availability and metal rates both move.
The commonest cause of an unexplained gap between two laboratory-grown quotes is the issuing laboratory, followed by undisclosed post-growth treatment. Ask about both before concluding anything about the seller.
