Diamond Certificate Explained: direct answer
A diamond certificate — more accurately a grading report — is an independent laboratory’s description of one specific stone. It records the four grading characteristics, the measurements and proportions, fluorescence, any treatments, and whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.
Three things it is not, and each one causes real confusion:
- It is not a valuation. It never states what the stone is worth. If you need cover, an insurance valuation is a separate document.
- It is not a guarantee of resale value. It describes the stone; it promises nothing about the market.
- It is not proof of where the diamond was mined. It confirms natural or laboratory-grown origin, not a country or a mine.
What it is, is the only reliable basis for comparing two diamonds and for confirming that the stone in front of you is what the seller says it is. The word “certificate” slightly oversells it; laboratories themselves generally use “report”, because the document reports findings rather than certifying a guarantee.
What this term or grading factor means
Diamond grading is the systematic assessment of a stone against standardised scales, so that a diamond described in one place can be compared with one described somewhere else. The framework in general use was developed by the Gemological Institute of America and is set out in its guide to how diamonds are graded.
A report typically carries:
- Report number and date — the identifier you verify against the laboratory’s database.
- Shape and cutting style — for example round brilliant, or emerald step cut.
- Measurements in millimetres — the stone’s actual dimensions, which is what you see on a hand.
- Carat weight — to two decimal places.
- Colour grade — D through Z for white diamonds.
- Clarity grade — Flawless through Included, with a plotted diagram showing where inclusions sit.
- Cut, polish and symmetry — a full cut grade is standard for round brilliants; fancy shapes are generally reported with polish, symmetry and proportions rather than one overall cut grade.
- Fluorescence — the stone’s reaction under ultraviolet light.
- Origin and treatment statements — natural or laboratory-grown, and any clarity or colour treatment applied.
- Inscription — where the report number is laser-inscribed on the girdle.

Grading is done under controlled lighting, at standard magnification, by trained graders working independently of one another, with the stone submitted anonymously so the grader has no knowledge of its owner or its intended price. That independence is the entire value of the document.
The four characteristics
- Cut — proportions, symmetry and polish, and therefore light return. The only characteristic determined by workmanship rather than nature.
- Colour — assessed by comparison against master stones under controlled light, face-down, so the grader judges body colour rather than sparkle.
- Clarity — the number, size, position and nature of inclusions and blemishes, assessed at 10x magnification.
- Carat — weight, measured precisely. Not the same as visible size.
Laboratories are not interchangeable
This is the single most useful thing to understand about reports. Grading involves expert judgement, and laboratories differ in how strictly they apply the scales. A stone graded at one level by a strict laboratory might receive a more generous grade elsewhere. Neither report is fraudulent — they are different assessments — but it means identical letters from different laboratories do not carry identical meaning, and the market prices them differently. When you compare two quotes showing the same grades, check the issuing laboratory first. What buyers should look for
Five checks, in order. None of them requires expertise.
- Verify the report on the laboratory’s own website. Look up the report number directly on the issuing laboratory’s database. Do not rely on a printed sheet, a PDF you were emailed, or a photograph — those can be altered. The database is the source of truth.
- Match the report to the actual stone. A report proves nothing if it belongs to a different diamond. Check the millimetre measurements against the stone, and ask to see the laser inscription on the girdle under magnification where one exists.
- Read the origin and treatment lines. Confirm whether it says natural or laboratory-grown, and whether any clarity or colour treatment is recorded. Both materially affect value, and both must be disclosed.
- Look at the clarity plot, not just the grade. The diagram shows where inclusions sit. One near the edge can be hidden by a prong; one under the table cannot. This is how you buy a lower clarity grade without seeing the difference.
- Note the report date. An older report still describes the stone accurately, but if the diamond has been reset or repaired since, ask what has happened to it in the meantime.
How it affects appearance, quality or price
The report does not change the stone. What it changes is your ability to price it correctly and to compare it with anything else.
- A stone with a recognised report generally commands more than an equivalent stone without one, because the buyer is not taking the grades on trust.
- The issuing laboratory itself affects price, for the strictness reason above.
- Recorded treatments reduce value relative to an untreated stone of the same apparent grades, and can also affect how the stone must be cleaned and repaired.
- Fluorescence is priced in even though it is usually invisible in normal light.
- The plot lets you buy intelligently. Knowing exactly where an inclusion sits means you can accept a lower grade that a prong will conceal — a real saving with no visual cost.
Common misunderstandings and mistakes
- “The certificate proves it is worth what I paid.” It does not. A grading report contains no valuation at all.
- “All certificates are equivalent.” They are not. Strictness varies between laboratories, and report types vary in scope.
- “A diamond tester proves the stone is natural.” It does not. Handheld testers measure conductivity, and a laboratory-grown diamond is diamond, so it passes. Only laboratory instrumentation separates origin.
- “The paperwork came with it, so it must match.” Verify the number online and check the measurements and inscription against the stone.
- “Higher clarity always looks better.” Past eye-clean, the difference requires magnification. You are buying a grade, not an appearance.
- “An appraisal and a grading report are the same thing.” They are different documents with different purposes. You may well need both.
- “Certified means guaranteed.” The report states findings as at the date of grading. It is not a warranty.
What to do next before buying
Before you pay for any diamond of meaningful size: ask for the report in advance rather than at collection; verify the number on the laboratory’s own database yourself; confirm the origin and treatment lines; check the measurements and inscription against the stone; and ask separately whether an insurance valuation is provided, since that is a different document.
If a seller cannot produce a verifiable report for a significant stone, or is reluctant to let you check it before purchase, treat that as the answer to your question.
