Certified Lab-Grown Diamonds South Africa: direct answer

A certified laboratory-grown diamond is one that has been submitted to an independent grading laboratory, assessed on the same 4Cs scales used for natural diamonds, and issued with a report that states plainly that the stone is laboratory-grown.

IGI — the International Gemological Institute — grades a large share of the laboratory-grown diamonds on the market, which is why its name comes up so often in this context. GIA also issues reports for laboratory-grown stones. Both are recognised independent laboratories, and a stone graded by either can be verified against the issuing laboratory’s own online database.

The short practical answer: buy the report, not the brand. What matters is that an independent laboratory has assessed the specific stone, that the report states its laboratory-grown origin, that any post-growth treatment is disclosed, and that you can verify the report yourself. A stone without a report is a description, not a specification.

What this term or grading factor means

Several terms get used loosely here, and the distinctions are worth holding onto.

The distinction between the last two rows and the first is the one that costs buyers money. A valuation is not a grading report, and an in-house grade is not an independent one. Both may be perfectly honest; neither lets you compare one seller’s stone with another’s.

How it is assessed or identified: laboratory-grown disclosure, grading report, growth method where relevant and value trade-offs

Laboratory-grown disclosure. A report for a laboratory-grown diamond states its origin explicitly, and the stone is normally laser-inscribed with both the report number and a note that it is laboratory-grown. This is not a footnote — it is the point of the document. Any description that leaves origin ambiguous should prompt a direct question.

The grading report. Laboratory-grown stones are graded on the same scales as natural ones: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, with fluorescence and any treatment recorded. Reports for lab-grown material also generally identify the growth method. Check that the report is recent, that it is issued for the individual stone, and that the measurements on it match the stone you are shown.

Growth method. HPHT and CVD are the two production routes, and both produce genuine diamond. The method itself is not a quality indicator. Where it becomes relevant is treatment: post-growth HPHT processing to improve colour is common in CVD material, and it should be disclosed on the report. Ask directly. Value trade-offs. We make no claims about how laboratory-grown diamonds hold value. They trade in a market that is separate from the natural diamond market and is younger, and anyone weighing resale should take independent advice rather than a seller’s view. What we will say is practical: keep the report. Because origin must be disclosed on any onward sale and to insurers, documentation matters more here than almost anywhere else.

What buyers should look for

Work through these before paying for anything.

  1. A report from a recognised independent laboratory, issued for the specific stone rather than for a grade range or a parcel.
  2. Explicit laboratory-grown disclosure on the report, the invoice and any valuation.
  3. A laser inscription matching the report number. Ask to see it under magnification.
  4. Online verification. Look the report number up on the issuing laboratory’s own site yourself. Do not rely on a printed or emailed copy, which can be altered.
  5. Treatment disclosure — specifically whether the stone received HPHT processing after growth.
  6. Measurements that match. Compare the millimetre dimensions on the report against the stone in front of you.
  7. The cut grade, or for fancy shapes the proportions, since no overall cut grade is issued for shapes other than round brilliants.
  8. Consistency across documents. Report, invoice and valuation should agree on origin, weight and grades. If they do not, ask why before proceeding.

How it affects appearance, quality or price

Appearance. Certification does not change how a diamond looks. What it does is tell you accurately what you are looking at, which is what allows you to compare two stones instead of two sales pitches.

Quality. Grading standards are not perfectly uniform between laboratories, and this is the single most useful thing to understand when comparing certified stones. The same letters on reports from two different laboratories do not necessarily describe identical stones. When you compare quotes, compare the issuing laboratory as carefully as you compare the grades — a difference there explains a great many otherwise puzzling price gaps.

Price. A certified stone generally costs more than an uncertified one of nominally similar description, and the difference reflects the grading itself plus the confidence it provides. What is worth saying is that the report is usually a small proportion of the total and disproportionately valuable, both for making a confident decision now and for insuring or reselling later.

Common misunderstandings and mistakes

The errors below account for most of the trouble we see in this area.

  • “Certified means guaranteed.” A report is a laboratory’s expert opinion on a stone at a point in time. It is not a warranty and it is not a valuation.
  • “All laboratories grade the same.” They do not. Compare the issuing laboratory alongside the grades.
  • “The certificate proves it is a natural diamond.” The report states origin, whichever it is. Read what it actually says rather than assuming.
  • “A valuation is a certificate.” They are different documents serving different purposes, and a valuation alone tells you nothing reliable about grades.
  • Not verifying online. It takes a minute, it is free, and it is the single most effective check available to you.
  • Ignoring the inscription. Matching stone to report is the step that connects the paperwork to the object.
  • Accepting an in-house grade. It may be accurate, but it is not independent and cannot be compared across sellers.
  • Losing the report. A stone whose documentation has gone missing is materially harder to insure or sell.

What to do next before buying

Ask for the report before you ask for the price. Once you have the report number you can verify it yourself in a minute, and everything else in the conversation rests on solid ground.

Then compare like with like: same shape, same weight, same grades, same issuing laboratory. If a quote is materially lower than another, look at those four things before concluding anything about the seller.
