How we write about diamonds
A few principles run through everything on this site, and they are worth stating because they are not universal in this industry.
We tell you where not to spend. Clarity above the eye-clean threshold and colour above what your setting metal needs are invisible in a finished ring. We say so, repeatedly, because that is where most engagement ring budgets leak.
We do not treat diamonds as investments. Retail pricing includes margins that resale does not recover, on natural and laboratory-grown stones alike. Buy a ring because you want to own it.
We do not take a side on lab-grown versus natural. Both are diamond, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories, and indistinguishable by eye. Which suits you depends on whether origin matters to the wearer or whether reaching further on size and grades matters more. We set out the trade-offs and leave the decision where it belongs.
We are careful with claims. We do not quote prices we cannot stand behind, invent stock we do not have, or make ethical and sustainability claims without documentation to support them. Where something can only be answered by a specific stone’s paperwork, we say that instead of generalising.
What we ask you to insist on
The same things we would want ourselves, from any jeweller:
- An independent grading report for the centre stone, from a recognised laboratory.
- The report number verified on that laboratory’s own database, and matched to the laser inscription on the girdle.
- The diamond’s origin — natural or laboratory-grown — stated explicitly in writing on the invoice, not only on the report.
- The metal, its purity, and the quality of any accent stones, recorded on the invoice.
- Clear terms on returns, resizing and aftercare, before you pay.
