Diamond Cut Guide: direct answer
Cut is the most important of the four grading characteristics and the one most worth paying for. It measures how well a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish return light to the eye — in other words, whether the stone looks alive.
It is also the only characteristic created entirely by human workmanship. Colour and clarity are determined by how the crystal formed in the earth; carat is simply weight. Cut is a decision made by the person who shaped the rough — and that decision is usually a trade-off between making the stone beautiful and making it heavy.
One clarification first, because the word does double duty. Cut grade means the quality of the faceting and proportions. Cut is also used loosely to mean the shape — emerald cut, princess cut, and so on. This page is about the first. For the second, see diamond shapes.
What this term or grading factor means
A well-cut diamond takes light in through the top, bounces it around inside, and sends it back out through the top. A poorly cut one lets light escape through the bottom or the sides, where the eye never sees it. That leakage is why a badly cut stone looks dull or glassy no matter how good its other grades are.
Three effects together make up what people mean by sparkle:
- Brilliance — the white light returned from inside the stone. The main contributor to a diamond looking bright.
- Fire — the flashes of spectral colour produced as white light is split into its component wavelengths.
- Scintillation — the pattern of light and dark that flickers as the stone, the light or the viewer moves.
For round brilliants, laboratories issue a single overall cut grade — typically running from Excellent through Very Good, Good and Fair to Poor. For fancy shapes there is generally no equivalent overall grade, because there is no single agreed ideal proportion set for an oval or a pear. Reports for those shapes give polish, symmetry and the proportion figures, and you have to read them rather than looking for one letter.

Cut assessment combines measured proportions with an evaluation of finish, following the approach set out in GIA’s grading methodology. The figures that matter most on a report:
- Depth percentage — total depth relative to diameter. Too deep and light escapes through the sides while the stone looks small for its weight; too shallow and light passes straight through the bottom.
- Table percentage — the width of the flat top facet relative to the diameter. Affects the balance between brilliance and fire.
- Crown angle and pavilion angle — the geometry that actually determines whether light returns. These two working together matter more than either alone.
- Girdle thickness — an extremely thin girdle is vulnerable to chipping; an extremely thick one hides weight where you cannot see it.
- Polish and symmetry — the quality of the finish and the alignment of the facets, graded separately.
Verify the report on the issuing laboratory’s database, and note which laboratory issued it — strictness varies, and cut grading in particular is where that variation shows. See diamond certificate explained.
What buyers should look for
- Treat cut as the grade you do not compromise. If the budget has to give somewhere, move on clarity first, then colour. Cut last, and ideally not at all.
- For round brilliants, look at the overall cut grade and prefer the top of the scale. This is the one shape where a single letter genuinely does the work for you.
- For fancy shapes, read the numbers. There is no overall grade, so check depth and table percentages, polish and symmetry, and look at the stone itself.
- Look for a bow-tie in elongated shapes. Oval, marquise and pear cuts can show a dark band across the centre caused by the pavilion shadowing the eye. It appears on no report and varies from stone to stone — only looking at the actual diamond will tell you.
- Check the diameter against the weight. A stone materially narrower than expected for its carat weight is cut deep, carrying mass you paid for but cannot see. See diamond size chart.
- View it in more than one light. Jewellery display lighting is engineered to make any stone sparkle. Look at it in daylight, and in ordinary indoor light, before deciding.
How it affects appearance, quality or price
Cut affects appearance more than the other three characteristics combined, and it is the only one visible from across a room. Nobody at a dinner table can assess a stone’s clarity grade or tell an F from an H. Everyone can see whether a diamond is bright.
It carries a price premium, for two reasons. Cutting for optimal proportions means sacrificing more of the original rough — a cutter maximising beauty ends up with a lighter stone than one maximising weight, and is paid for weight. And it takes more skill and time. So a top cut grade costs more both in lost material and in labour.
That premium is the best-value money in diamond buying. A well-cut stone at a modest colour and clarity grade consistently outperforms a poorly cut stone with better grades on paper, and usually costs less. The corollary is a warning: a stone priced suspiciously low for its stated carat, colour and clarity is very often a stone with a weak cut. That is where the discount is hiding.
Common misunderstandings and mistakes
- “Cut means the shape.” The two get used interchangeably but are different things. Emerald cut is a shape; cut grade is quality of workmanship. A poorly cut emerald cut is still an emerald cut.
- “Every shape gets a cut grade.” Generally only round brilliants receive an overall cut grade. For fancy shapes you read proportions, polish and symmetry.
- “More facets means more sparkle.” It does not. Proportions and angles determine light return, not facet count. Stones advertised on facet count alone are marketing rather than gemmology.
- “Clarity or colour will make up for a weak cut.” Nothing makes up for a weak cut. It is the foundation.
- “Excellent polish and symmetry means excellent cut.” They are separate grades. A stone can be beautifully finished and still have proportions that leak light.
- “It sparkled in the shop, so the cut is good.” Retail lighting makes almost anything sparkle. Judge it in daylight.
What to do next before buying
Set your cut requirement first and build the rest of the specification around it. For a round brilliant, ask for the top of the cut scale and treat it as fixed. For a fancy shape, ask to see the proportion figures and then view the actual stone, checking for a bow-tie and for even light return across the face.
Then compare two stones side by side in the same light — cut quality is far easier to see comparatively than in isolation. If one looks visibly brighter, that is cut, and it is worth what it costs.
