Lab Grown vs Natural Diamond: quick comparison
Both are diamond. Same carbon crystal structure, same hardness, same refractive index, same optical behaviour, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories. A laboratory-grown diamond is not a fake, not a simulant, and not a lesser stone. The difference is origin: one crystallised in the earth’s mantle over geological time, the other was grown in a reactor over weeks.
Because they are the same material sold in two different markets, the decision is not about quality. It is about what you value and what you want your budget to do. The short answer: if you want the largest, best-graded stone your budget can reach and the ring is to be worn rather than held as an asset, laboratory-grown gives you more. If rarity, geological origin and an established secondary market matter to you, natural is what you are actually buying, and the premium is what you are paying for.

Appearance and design differences
At equivalent grades there is no visible difference. Set two stones of the same shape, cut, colour and clarity side by side and nobody — including a jeweller, by eye alone — can reliably say which is which. Sparkle, fire and brilliance are functions of cut quality and proportions, not of origin.
Where the choice does change appearance is indirect, through budget. Because laboratory-grown costs less per carat, the same money reaches a larger stone or stronger grades.
- Larger centre stones become realistic — and a larger stone needs a mount engineered for it, with sturdier prongs and a decision about setting height.
- Higher colour and clarity grades come within reach — which particularly benefits step cuts such as emerald and Asscher, where inclusions and tint show more readily.
- Accent stones become affordable in quantity — making halo and pavé designs more attainable, at the cost of more ongoing maintenance.
- The setting becomes a bigger share of the total — so the mount deserves more attention, not less.
One caution that applies to both: do not spend the saving on carat weight at the expense of cut. A large stone with a weak cut looks flat regardless of origin, and that is the most common regret in the laboratory-grown market.
Quality and technical differences: laboratory-grown disclosure, grading report, growth method where relevant and value trade-offs
How they are grown
Two methods dominate. HPHT reproduces conditions similar to the mantle, applying high pressure and temperature to carbon around a seed crystal. CVD builds the crystal layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas in a vacuum chamber. Both produce genuine diamond, and for most buyers the method is not a deciding factor. Some stones are treated after growth to improve colour, and that treatment should be recorded on the report.
How they are told apart
This matters, because it is widely misunderstood. You cannot separate them by eye. You also cannot separate them with the handheld testers sold online — those measure thermal or electrical conductivity, and since a laboratory-grown diamond is diamond, it passes as diamond. That is the correct result, not a failure of the test.
Distinguishing origin requires specialist instrumentation available to gemmological laboratories, which examine growth structures, strain patterns and trace characteristics that differ between mantle-formed and reactor-grown crystals. In practice, therefore, the grading report is the proof of origin — not a shop-counter test, and not a seller’s assurance. Verify the report number on the issuing laboratory’s own database, and check the laser inscription on the girdle where there is one.
Grading and disclosure
Both are graded on cut, colour, clarity and carat using the scales in GIA’s grading methodology. Report formats differ between natural and laboratory-grown stones, and the range of reports issued is set out in GIA’s guide to report types. Laboratory-grown origin must be disclosed clearly and in writing. When comparing two quotes, check the laboratory and report type match — otherwise the grades are not directly comparable.
Neither is a simulant
Cubic zirconia and moissanite belong in a different category entirely: different materials, lower hardness, different optical properties, not graded on the diamond scales. The natural-versus-laboratory-grown question is a choice between two diamonds. The diamond-versus-simulant question is a choice between two materials.
Price and value considerations
Laboratory-grown stones cost substantially less per carat than natural stones of equivalent grade. That gap is the entire practical case for choosing them, and it is a strong one for most buyers. Three things deserve to be said plainly rather than glossed over:
- Laboratory-grown prices have fallen considerably as production capacity has expanded, and they are less stable than natural diamond pricing has historically been. A stone bought today may be available for less later.
- Resale is not comparable. Natural diamonds have a long-established secondary market; the secondary market for laboratory-grown stones is limited. Neither, however, should be bought as an investment — retail price and resale realisation are different numbers even for natural stones.

Durability, maintenance or ownership trade-offs
There is essentially nothing to choose between them here, and claims to the contrary are marketing.
- Hardness and scratch resistance — identical. Both sit at 10 on the Mohs scale.
- Chipping — both can chip if struck at a vulnerable point, because hardness is not toughness. Pointed and cornered shapes need protective settings whatever their origin.
- Cleaning and repair — the same. Neither clouds, fades or degrades with wear.
- Setting options — unrestricted for both.
- Insurance — both should be documented. Ask specifically for an insurance valuation, which is a different document from a grading report.
The genuine ownership difference is emotional and social rather than physical: how you feel about the stone’s origin, and how it will be described within a family over time. That is a real consideration, but it is not a durability question.
Who each option suits
Laboratory-grown suits you if
- Visible size is the priority and the budget is firm.
- You want top-tier cut, colour and clarity that a natural stone at the same money could not reach.
- The ring is unambiguously to be worn, not held as an asset.
- You want a large stone for a piece worn occasionally, where a natural equivalent would be hard to justify.
Natural suits you if
- Geological origin and finite rarity are part of what the ring means to you.
- You expect the piece to be passed on, and want it to sit in the established secondary market.
- You are matching or complementing an existing natural stone.
- The recipient has expressed a preference — worth asking about, tactfully, before you decide for them.
Which option should you choose?
There is no universally correct answer, and anyone who gives you one is selling rather than advising. The decision turns on a single question: is the origin of the stone part of what makes the ring meaningful to you?
If yes, buy natural and accept the premium as the price of the thing you actually want. If no — if what you want is the most beautiful diamond your budget can buy, worn every day — laboratory-grown is the rational choice and you should make it without embarrassment.
Two closing points. Whichever you choose, insist on an independent grading report stating origin and treatment, and verify it yourself. And if the ring is a surprise, consider that the recipient may have a view of their own; a conversation beforehand is not unromantic, it is how you avoid buying the wrong thing beautifully.
