Moissanite vs Lab Diamond: quick comparison

This is the comparison that matters most to buyers looking for an alternative to a mined diamond, because these two options are chosen for the same reason — more stone for the money — and are frequently presented side by side.

The critical distinction: a laboratory-grown diamond is a diamond. Same carbon crystal structure, same hardness, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories, differing from a mined stone only in origin. Moissanite is not a diamond. It is silicon carbide — a different material with different optical properties, sold as its own gemstone. Both are laboratory-created, and that shared fact is what causes them to be conflated, but they are not comparable products.

The short answer: if you want a diamond, choose the laboratory-grown diamond — it is one, and the price gap to moissanite has narrowed considerably. If the stone being a diamond genuinely does not matter to you and you want the absolute maximum size and sparkle per rand, moissanite goes further.

Appearance and design differences

A laboratory-grown diamond looks exactly like a mined diamond, because it is one. Moissanite looks like moissanite — which most of the time reads as a very bright white stone, and in strong light reads as distinctly more colourful than a diamond.

  • Fire is the visible difference. Moissanite’s dispersion is roughly double that of diamond, so it throws noticeably stronger rainbow flashes. Whether that is a feature or a giveaway depends entirely on your taste.
  • Double refraction. Moissanite splits light into two rays, producing a visible doubling of facet edges under magnification. Diamond, laboratory-grown included, is singly refractive and shows none.
  • The difference scales with size. Below about half a carat equivalent the two are difficult to tell apart casually. At two carats and up, moissanite’s character is apparent to anyone who looks.
  • How size is quoted differs. Laboratory-grown diamonds are sold by carat weight like any diamond. Moissanite is less dense, so it is properly quoted in millimetres or as a diamond-equivalent size — if a moissanite is quoted in carats, ask for the actual millimetre measurement.

Neither material constrains the design. Both are hard enough for daily wear in any setting and metal.

Quality and technical differences: laboratory-grown disclosure, grading report, growth method where relevant and value trade-offs

Two different documents

This is the most practical difference between them. A laboratory-grown diamond comes with an independent grading report from a gemmological laboratory, recording cut, colour, clarity and carat on the scales in GIA’s grading methodology, stating laboratory-grown origin and any post-growth treatment. Moissanite is not graded on those scales and does not receive that kind of report. It is typically supplied with a manufacturer’s certificate or a lifetime warranty from the brand. That is a normal and honest arrangement — but it is a seller’s document rather than an independent assessment, and it means moissanite quality claims are not comparable to diamond grades.

Growth methods

Laboratory-grown diamonds are produced by HPHT, which reproduces mantle-like conditions, or CVD, which builds the crystal from a carbon-rich gas. Moissanite is produced by entirely different processes for growing silicon carbide crystals. Both are manufactured; that similarity is superficial and tells you nothing about the resulting material.

Testing, and why it confuses people

Handheld thermal testers register a laboratory-grown diamond as diamond, correctly, because it is one. They can also register moissanite as diamond, because moissanite conducts heat similarly — which is why combination testers that also check electrical conductivity exist. The practical conclusion is the same in both cases: a pen tester proves very little, and documentation is what actually establishes what you have.

Price and value considerations

Moissanite remains cheaper than laboratory-grown diamond, but the gap is far narrower than it once was. Laboratory-grown diamond prices have fallen substantially as production capacity has expanded, which has changed this comparison materially in the last few years.

  • For many buyers the price difference is no longer decisive. If moissanite was on your list purely because a diamond seemed out of reach, price a laboratory-grown diamond before you decide — it may be closer than you expect, and you would be getting an actual diamond with an actual report.
  • The setting dominates both quotes. With an inexpensive centre stone, metal and labour become the bulk of the cost. A moissanite in platinum with a complex mount is not a cheap ring.
  • Neither has a meaningful resale market. Laboratory-grown diamond resale is limited; moissanite resale is effectively nil. Neither should be bought as an investment — jewellery is not a regulated investment product and we do not give financial advice.
  • Both markets are still moving. Treat any quoted figure as current at its date.

Durability, maintenance or ownership trade-offs

  • Hardness. Diamond is 10, moissanite about 9.25. Both are entirely adequate for daily wear; diamond remains harder in absolute terms.
  • Chipping. Both can chip if struck at a vulnerable point. Pointed and cornered shapes need protective settings either way.
  • Neither degrades. Both will look the same in twenty years with normal care. Claims that either clouds or fades are unfounded.
  • Insurance and documentation. A laboratory-grown diamond can be documented and insured conventionally. Moissanite generally is not worth insuring separately, though the mount may be.
  • Repairs. Tell any jeweller which material they are working with before heat is applied to the ring.

How the comparison has changed

This is a comparison worth revisiting if you last looked at it a few years ago, because one side of it has moved considerably.

Moissanite established itself when the choice was between a mined diamond and a simulant, with a very large gap between them. It occupied that middle ground almost alone: a durable, brilliant stone at a small fraction of diamond cost. That was a genuinely useful position and it is why moissanite became popular.

Laboratory-grown diamonds have since moved into much of that space. As production capacity expanded, their prices fell substantially, and for many specifications the gap to moissanite is now far narrower than most buyers assume. The practical question for a buyer today is no longer “can I afford a diamond at all?” but “how much am I actually saving by choosing a stone that is not one?”

Sometimes the answer is still “a lot”, particularly at larger sizes, and moissanite remains the right choice for plenty of buyers. But it is worth pricing both before deciding rather than assuming the gap is what it once was. Ask for a quote on each at the same millimetre size — not the same carat weight, since the two materials differ in density — and compare the real figures.

Who each option suits

Laboratory-grown diamond suits you if

  • You want the ring to contain a diamond, and to be able to say so accurately.
  • You want an independently graded stone with a verifiable report.
  • You prefer diamond’s whiter scintillation to strong rainbow fire.
  • The ring is an engagement ring and the recipient’s expectations matter — which is worth asking about rather than assuming.

Moissanite suits you if

  • You want the maximum possible size for the lowest outlay and are entirely comfortable that it is not a diamond.
  • You genuinely like the extra fire rather than tolerating it.
  • You want a travel ring, a stand-in, or a piece where value is not the point.
  • You would rather put the money into the setting or elsewhere.

Which option should you choose?

Ask yourself one question: does it matter to you that the stone is a diamond?

If yes — and for engagement rings it often does, to one or both people — then the laboratory-grown diamond is the answer, and the remaining price gap is smaller than most people assume. If genuinely no, moissanite gives you more stone for less money and there is nothing to apologise for in choosing it.

What we would not recommend is choosing moissanite because it can pass for a diamond. Buy it because you like it, tell people what it is, and enjoy it. A stone chosen to deceive tends to become a source of anxiety rather than pleasure — and whichever you choose, insist the material is stated explicitly in writing on your paperwork.
