Two carats is the weight at which laboratory-grown diamonds most obviously change what a buyer can consider. It is a size that reads unmistakably across a room, and for many buyers it is the point at which a natural stone of comparable specification stops being realistic.
The stone itself is diamond: the same crystal structure, the same hardness, the same optical properties, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories. What differs is origin, and origin must be disclosed on the report and the invoice.
At two carats one thing changes materially from smaller sizes: the supporting grades stop being optional. Colour and clarity that pass unnoticed at half a carat are visible at two, so the specification has to rise with the weight. The advantage here is that it can — without abandoning the size.
- High-specification solitaire — the most common choice at this weight, and the one the material is best suited to.
- Elongated fancy shapes — oval, radiant, emerald or pear, all of which face up larger than a two carat round.

Shape governs how the weight presents. A two carat round brilliant is compact and maximally bright; an oval or radiant of the same weight is longer and reads larger on the finger.

What to compare: laboratory-grown disclosure, grading report, growth method where relevant and value trade-offs
Laboratory-grown disclosure. The report and the invoice should both state plainly that the stone is laboratory-grown. The accepted terms are “laboratory-grown”, “lab-grown” and “laboratory-created”. Anything vaguer is a reason to ask a direct question.
The grading report. Laboratory-grown diamonds are graded on the same 4Cs scales as natural stones, by the same recognised laboratories. Check that the report is issued for this specific stone, that it is recent, and that the millimetre measurements match what you are shown. The stone should carry a laser inscription matching the report number.
Growth method. HPHT and CVD both produce genuine diamond and neither is inherently better. Where the method becomes relevant is treatment: post-growth HPHT processing to improve colour is common in CVD material and must be disclosed. Ask directly. Our HPHT vs CVD comparison sets out the difference.
Value trade-offs. We make no claims about how laboratory-grown diamonds hold value. They trade in a separate and younger market from natural stones, and anyone weighing resale should take independent advice rather than a seller’s view. The practical point is to keep the report, since origin must be disclosed to insurers and to any future buyer.
Diamond quality and grading considerations
At two carats the grades behave as they do in a natural stone of the same size, which means more strictly than at one carat.
Cut matters most. Light travels further through a larger stone, so proportion errors are magnified — a poorly cut two carat diamond looks watery in a way a smaller one does not. Because the material makes a high cut grade affordable here, there is rarely a defensible reason to accept less.
Colour becomes visible at this size in a way it is not at half a carat. There is simply more material for light to travel through. This is the grade most commonly under-specified by buyers scaling up, and the one where the pricing of laboratory-grown material most usefully helps.
Clarity follows the same logic: a wider table gives an inclusion more room to be seen. Ask where the inclusions sit on the plot, not only what the grade letter says. Position matters as much as grade.

- Setting, metal and stone count — halo, pavé and three-stone designs add material and hand-setting labour.
