Two carats is the weight at which laboratory-grown diamonds change what is possible for most buyers. A mined two-carat stone with good grades is a substantial purchase; a laboratory-grown equivalent sits in a completely different band, and the gap is wide enough that it usually settles the question before anything else is considered.
A well-cut two-carat round measures around 8.1mm across — visibly and unmistakably a large diamond, covering close to 60% more surface area than a one-carat. In the laboratory-grown market that size comes with grade combinations that a mined stone at the same budget could not reach: excellent cut, colourless or near-colourless, and comfortably eye-clean, all together.
Two things to hold onto. Laboratory-grown prices have fallen considerably as production capacity has expanded and remain less stable than mined pricing, so treat any figure as current at its date. And because the stone costs less, the setting becomes a much larger share of the total — at two carats it can still easily be a third or more of the quote.
Price ranges and what changes the price
At a nominal two-carat weight in the laboratory-grown market, these are the variables that move the figure.

Carat: the threshold still applies

A stone at 1.90 to 1.95ct sits below it while measuring a fraction of a millimetre less. The absolute saving is smaller than on a mined stone, but it is free and worth asking for by name.
Cut: where the freed budget belongs
This is the most important point at this weight. Because laboratory-grown stones cost less per carat, the pull toward buying more size and accepting a weaker cut is strong — and it is the trade that reliably disappoints. A large dull stone reads as glass. Set the cut grade first and treat it as fixed; at this price you can afford to.
Colour: aim higher than in a mined stone
At two carats body colour starts to become visible in a way it is not at one, which normally forces a compromise. In the laboratory-grown market the higher grades are reachable, so you can simply avoid the compromise. Choose to suit your metal, but expect to sit higher than you would in a mined stone at the same money.
Clarity: raise the threshold, comfortably
A two-carat table shows more than a one-carat table, so the grade at which a stone is genuinely eye-clean is higher. In this market that grade is affordable, so there is little reason to push down as far as the scale will allow. Ask for the plotted diagram and check what sits under the table.
Natural vs lab-grown price differences where relevant
The comparison is the point of this page. Setting, metal and design costs
With a comparatively inexpensive centre stone, the mount is a large share of the quote.
- Metal type and mass. Platinum is denser than gold, so an identical design needs more of it by weight. 18ct contains more gold than 9ct.
- Accent stones. Halo, pavé and channel designs add many small diamonds, each hand-set.
- Bench hours. A plain solitaire is the leanest build; engraving, milgrain and bespoke geometry all add time.
- Finger size — a larger shank uses more metal, a small but real factor.

If a quote gives you one figure and a carat weight, ask for it to be broken down. Two stones that both answer to the same carat weight can differ substantially, and a quote that does not identify which stone it refers to cannot be compared with anything.
Ask which laboratory issued the report and which report type it is, since laboratory-grown stones are issued reports in distinct formats and abbreviated ones cover less ground. How to compare quotes without comparing unlike-for-like
Nearly every unexplained price gap between two quotes is a specification gap. Line these up before concluding one is expensive:
- Origin — natural or laboratory-grown, stated explicitly rather than implied.
- All four grades, not just the carat weight. A quote giving only weight cannot be compared with anything.
- The issuing laboratory and report type — identical letters from different laboratories do not mean the same thing or carry the same price.
- Millimetre measurements — a deep-cut stone looks smaller for the same weight.
- Treatment status and fluorescence — both appear on the report and both move the price.
- What the quote includes — sizing, the report itself, an insurance valuation, any aftercare.
- The date of the quote, since availability and metal rates both move.
