Five carats is a size very few people ever wear, and laboratory-grown material is the reason a buyer might realistically consider it. In natural stone, five carats at a specification worth having is the territory of serious collectors.
The stone is diamond: identical crystal structure, hardness and optical properties to a mined one, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories, with origin stated explicitly on the report and the invoice.
What changes at five carats is that the ring stops being jewellery you forget you are wearing. It is physically large, it sits high unless deliberately designed otherwise, and it needs thinking about as an object you will live with rather than only as a stone you are buying.
- Solitaire — the usual choice; nothing else is needed at this size.
- Elongated fancy shapes — oval, radiant or emerald, which spread five carats across a longer outline.

The setting is an engineering problem at five carats. The shank must be substantial enough not to flex under the mass, the claws have to be properly proportioned to the stone, and the gallery needs to support it without adding unnecessary height. This is not a stock mount with a bigger head.
Profile height is the decision that determines whether the ring is actually worn. Five carats set high is spectacular and impractical; set lower it remains striking and can be lived with.

What to compare: laboratory-grown disclosure, grading report, growth method where relevant and value trade-offs
Laboratory-grown disclosure. The report and the invoice should both state plainly that the stone is laboratory-grown. The accepted terms are “laboratory-grown”, “lab-grown” and “laboratory-created”. Anything vaguer is a reason to ask a direct question.
The grading report. Laboratory-grown diamonds are graded on the same 4Cs scales as natural stones, by the same recognised laboratories. Check that the report is issued for this specific stone, that it is recent, and that the millimetre measurements match what you are shown. The stone should carry a laser inscription matching the report number.
Growth method. HPHT and CVD both produce genuine diamond and neither is inherently better. Where the method becomes relevant is treatment: post-growth HPHT processing to improve colour is common in CVD material and must be disclosed. Ask directly. Our HPHT vs CVD comparison sets out the difference.
Value trade-offs. We make no claims about how laboratory-grown diamonds hold value. They trade in a separate and younger market from natural stones, and anyone weighing resale should take independent advice rather than a seller’s view. The practical point is to keep the report, since origin must be disclosed to insurers and to any future buyer.
Diamond quality and grading considerations
Cut is the grade that determines whether a diamond looks alive. A well-cut stone returns light through the table; a poorly cut one of identical weight and grades looks dull and can appear smaller. It is graded on round brilliants; on fancy shapes there is no overall cut grade, so proportions must be judged visually.
Colour runs D to Z. The practical question is not which grade is highest but at what point tint becomes visible in your chosen shape and metal. Warm metals hide more; white metals expose more; larger stones show more.
Clarity describes inclusions. In a brilliant cut, features that need magnification to find are unlikely to be seen in wear, and paying beyond eye-clean buys a number. Step cuts are the exception and need higher grades.
Carat is weight, not size. Prices step up sharply at round weights, so a stone just under a milestone can look identical to one just over it while sitting in a different bracket.
At five carats specifically: everything is visible. Light travels a long distance through the stone, so proportion errors show as a flat or watery centre; the table is very wide, so inclusions have room to be noticed; and body colour has a great deal of material to develop in. The one advantage of the material is that a strong grade combination is achievable at this size, so there is no good reason to accept a weak one — and a five carat stone with visible faults is not impressive, it is conspicuous.

It is worth reconsidering if the ring is intended for constant daily wear in a hands-on occupation, where the practical difficulties are real, or if natural origin matters to you in itself.
