Buying a lab-grown diamond loose — as an unmounted stone, before any setting is chosen — is the approach that gives you the most control. You see the diamond on its own, judge it against its report, and only then decide what it goes into.
A laboratory-grown diamond is chemically, physically and optically a diamond. It is not a simulant. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials that imitate the look; a lab-grown diamond is carbon in the same crystal structure as a mined stone, graded on the same scale by the same laboratories. What differs is its origin, and that origin must be disclosed.
The options divide by growth method, by grade combination and by shape.
- By growth method — HPHT and CVD are the two production routes. Both produce genuine diamond; the method is recorded on the report and occasionally affects appearance.
- By grade combination — the same 4Cs apply, and because lab-grown stones are generally available in higher grades for a given budget, buyers often specify more tightly than they would with a natural stone.
- By shape — round brilliant, oval, cushion, emerald, radiant, pear and the rest, exactly as with natural diamonds.
- By intended use — a centre stone for engagement rings, a matched pair for earrings, or a replacement for an existing setting.
Styles, shapes and setting combinations
Because the stone is bought loose, the setting decision is made afterwards and independently — which is the main practical advantage of this route. You are not choosing from finished rings; you are choosing a diamond and then designing around it.
Shape drives that design more than anything else. A round brilliant suits almost any setting. An elongated shape such as oval or pear reads larger for its weight and sits well in a slim solitaire. A step cut such as emerald or Asscher wants a clean, uncluttered setting that does not compete with its geometry.

Once the stone is chosen, the setting can be selected from stock designs or made to fit. Buying loose is also the sensible route if you intend to design your own diamond ring, because the stone’s exact measurements determine what the setting has to accommodate.
What to compare: laboratory-grown disclosure, grading report, growth method where relevant and value trade-offs
This is the comparison that matters most when buying loose, and it is different from the natural-diamond checklist.
Disclosure. A laboratory-grown diamond must be described as laboratory-grown. The terms “lab-grown”, “laboratory-grown” and “laboratory-created” are the accepted ones. Vaguer language such as “cultured” or a description that omits origin entirely is a reason to ask direct questions.
The grading report. Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same major laboratories that grade natural stones, and the report will state clearly that the diamond is laboratory-grown. Check that the report is issued for the specific stone in front of you and that the inscription on the girdle matches the report number.
Growth method. HPHT and CVD both produce genuine diamond. The method is worth knowing because it is occasionally associated with particular characteristics on a report — and because post-growth treatment to improve colour is common with CVD material and should be disclosed. Value trade-offs. The important one is that a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond of identical grades do not behave the same way as assets. We do not make claims about future value in either direction; what we will say is that they are separate markets with different supply dynamics, and any buyer weighing resale should treat that as a question for independent advice rather than for a seller.
Diamond quality and grading considerations
The 4Cs apply unchanged, but the way buyers use them tends to shift.
Cut is the grade that determines how the stone looks, exactly as with a natural diamond, and it is graded identically. It remains the one not to compromise on.
Colour is graded on the same D-to-Z scale. Because higher colour grades are more attainable within a given budget in lab-grown material, many buyers specify further up the scale than they would otherwise.
Clarity is likewise graded on the standard scale. Lab-grown stones have inclusions too; they are simply of different types, reflecting how the crystal was grown rather than how it formed geologically.
Carat works the same way, including the price steps at round weights.
One point specific to this material: a report may note post-growth treatment, most often HPHT processing applied to improve colour. That is not a defect, but it is a material fact about the stone and it should be disclosed on the report and by the seller. Ask if it is not obvious. - Growth method and treatment — these can affect price and should be disclosed either way.
- Report — which laboratory graded the stone, and how recently.
- Setting, if you add one — a separate cost from the stone itself, and one of the reasons buying loose makes budgeting clearer.

It suits buyers replacing a stone in an existing setting. And it suits those who want to design their own engagement ring around a specific diamond rather than choosing from what is already made up.
