Colour
Graded on the same D-to-Z scale. Because higher grades are more attainable here, many buyers specify further up than they would with a natural stone. Whether that is worth doing depends on the metal: in yellow or rose gold the top grades are largely invisible, so the money is better spent elsewhere.
Clarity
Graded on the standard scale. Laboratory-grown stones have inclusions too — they reflect how the crystal was grown rather than how it formed geologically. In a brilliant cut, eye-clean is the practical target; emerald and Asscher cuts need more, and that should be budgeted from the start.

This is the single most useful request you can make of any jeweller quoting a laboratory-grown ring, and surprisingly few buyers make it. A single combined figure tells you nothing about whether the stone is good value, whether the setting is well made, or which of the two is absorbing your budget.
Once the two are separated you can compare each against other quotes on its own terms — the stone against its report, the mount against its metal, mass and construction. It also makes it obvious if a cheap headline figure is being reached by pairing a reasonable diamond with a thinly made setting, which is the commonest way a quote is made to look competitive.
How to compare quotes without comparing unlike-for-like
Nearly every unexplained price gap between two quotes is a specification gap. Line these up before concluding one is expensive:
- Origin — natural or laboratory-grown, stated explicitly rather than implied.
- All four grades, not just the carat weight. A quote giving only weight cannot be compared with anything.
- The issuing laboratory and report type — identical letters from different laboratories do not mean the same thing or carry the same price.
- Millimetre measurements — a deep-cut stone looks smaller for the same weight.
- Treatment status and fluorescence — both appear on the report and both move the price.
- What the quote includes — sizing, the report itself, an insurance valuation, any aftercare.
- The date of the quote, since availability and metal rates both move.
