Lab Grown Diamond Price vs Natural: quick comparison
This page answers one question: how much less does a laboratory-grown diamond cost than a mined one, and what exactly are you giving up for the difference?
The short answer is that laboratory-grown diamonds cost a fraction of mined diamonds of equivalent specification, and the gap widens as carat weight increases. At half a carat the difference is real but modest in absolute terms; at three carats and above it is the difference between reachable and unreachable for most buyers.
What you give up is not quality. Both are diamond — identical carbon crystal, identical hardness, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories. What you give up is rarity, and the secondary-market position that goes with it.

Appearance and design differences
At equivalent grades there is no visible difference whatsoever. Set a mined and a laboratory-grown diamond of the same shape, cut, colour and clarity side by side and nobody — including a jeweller, by eye alone — can reliably say which is which. Sparkle, fire and brilliance are functions of cut quality and proportions, not of origin.
Where the choice changes appearance is entirely indirect, through what the budget reaches. Because laboratory-grown costs less per carat, the same money buys a larger stone, stronger grades, or both. In practice that produces four consequences:
- Larger centre stones become realistic, and a larger stone needs a mount engineered for it — sturdier prongs, a stronger gallery, and a decision about setting height.
- Higher colour and clarity grades come within reach, which particularly benefits step cuts such as emerald and Asscher where inclusions and tint show readily.
- Accent stones become affordable in quantity, making halo and pavé designs more attainable at the cost of more ongoing maintenance.
- The setting becomes a bigger share of the total, so the mount deserves more attention rather than less.
One caution applies to both: do not spend the saving on carat weight at the expense of cut. A large stone with a weak cut looks flat regardless of origin, and it is the most common regret in the laboratory-grown market.
Quality and technical differences: laboratory-grown disclosure, grading report, growth method where relevant and value trade-offs
Both are graded on cut, colour, clarity and carat using the scales in GIA’s grading methodology, with report formats described in GIA’s guide to report types. Laboratory-grown origin must be disclosed clearly and in writing on the report.
What actually differs
- Growth method. HPHT reproduces mantle-like pressure and temperature; CVD builds the crystal from a carbon-rich gas. Both produce genuine diamond and for most buyers the method is not decisive.
- Post-growth treatment. Some laboratory-grown stones are treated after growth to improve colour. This should appear on the report, and treated and untreated stones are not priced alike.
- Report format. Laboratory-grown stones receive reports in distinct formats. When comparing, check the laboratory and report type match, or the grades are not directly comparable.
- How they are told apart. Not by eye, and not by handheld testers — those measure conductivity and a laboratory-grown diamond is diamond, so it passes. Separating origin needs specialist instrumentation, which is why the report is the proof.
Price and value considerations
The price gap is the entire practical argument, and it is a strong one for most buyers. But three things need saying plainly rather than glossed over.
Laboratory-grown prices have fallen considerably as production capacity has expanded, and they are less stable than mined diamond pricing has historically been. A stone bought today may be available for less later. If that would trouble you, factor it in now rather than discovering it afterwards.
Resale is not comparable. Mined diamonds have a long-established secondary market; the market for laboratory-grown stones is limited. The gap scales with size. This is the practical planning point. At small weights the saving is modest in rand terms and the origin decision is comparatively light. At two carats and above it becomes the decision that determines what is achievable at all.

Durability, maintenance or ownership trade-offs
There is essentially nothing to choose between them here, and claims to the contrary are marketing.
- Hardness — identical. Both sit at 10 on the Mohs scale.
- Chipping — both can chip if struck at a vulnerable point, because hardness is not toughness. Pointed and cornered shapes need protective settings either way.
- Cleaning and repair — the same. Neither clouds, fades or degrades with wear.
- Setting options — unrestricted for both.
- Insurance — both should be documented, with a valuation obtained separately from the grading report.
The genuine ownership difference is social rather than physical: how you feel about the stone’s origin, and how it will be described within a family over time. That is a real consideration, but it is not a durability question.
How the gap behaves as size increases
This is the part that most changes a buying decision, and it is rarely spelled out. The price difference between mined and laboratory-grown is not a fixed percentage — it widens as carat weight rises.
At half a carat the gap is real but modest in rand terms, which means a buyer who specifically wants a mined stone can usually have one without a painful premium. At one carat it becomes significant. At two carats it is large enough to determine what specification is reachable. At three carats and above it frequently determines whether the size is reachable at all.
The practical implication is that the origin decision deserves more weight the larger you go. If you are looking at half a carat and prefer a mined stone, buy one. If you are looking at three carats and the budget is fixed, the origin question is effectively the whole conversation, and everything else follows from it.
Why lab-grown pricing has moved and mined pricing has not
Mined supply is finite and its rate of extraction changes slowly, which is why natural diamond pricing has been comparatively stable over long periods. Laboratory-grown supply can be expanded by building more capacity, and a great deal of capacity has been built. That is the whole explanation for why one market has fallen and the other has not, and it is also why laboratory-grown pricing should be treated as current at its date rather than as a settled level.
Who each option suits

- Visible size is the priority and the budget is firm.
- You want cut, colour and clarity grades that a mined stone at the same money could not reach.
- The ring is unambiguously to be worn rather than held as an asset.
- You are looking above two carats, where the gap becomes decisive.
- You are comfortable that the market is still settling.
A mined diamond suits you if
- Geological origin and finite rarity are part of what the ring means to you.
- You expect the piece to be passed on and want it in the established secondary market.
- You are matching or complementing an existing mined stone.
- Price stability over time matters more than maximum size today.
- The person who will wear it has expressed a preference — worth asking about before deciding for them.
Which option should you choose?
The price gap does not answer the question on its own, because it is not a question about money. It is a question about whether the stone’s origin is part of what makes the ring meaningful to you.
If it is, buy mined and accept the premium as the price of the thing you actually want. If it is not — if what you want is the most beautiful diamond your budget can buy, worn every day — laboratory-grown is the rational choice and there is nothing to apologise for in making it.

For many buyers the gap is larger than expected and the decision resolves itself; for others it is smaller than expected and the mined stone becomes reachable.
