One clarification first, because the phrase “real diamond” is doing a lot of work and people mean different things by it. A laboratory-grown diamond is a real diamond — same carbon crystal, same hardness, graded on the same scales. It is not a fake. Colour: choose it with the metal

Cost climbs steeply toward the colourless end of the D-to-Z scale. But a stone a grade or two warmer reads as white in yellow or rose gold, because the metal warms the perception anyway. Deciding metal and colour grade together rather than separately routinely frees meaningful budget on a natural stone.

Clarity: eye-clean is the threshold

Above the point where inclusions need magnification to find, further clarity spend buys paperwork rather than appearance. This is the largest single decision affecting what a diamond costs, and it is worth making deliberately rather than by default. Natural and laboratory-grown stones are the same material graded on the same scales; the difference is origin, rarity and market position. Setting, metal and design costs

Moving from a loose stone to a finished ring adds three further costs, quoted separately from the diamond.

With a natural stone the diamond usually dominates the quote, particularly above a carat, so the mount is a smaller proportion than it would be with a laboratory-grown stone of the same size. That said, it is worth building properly — a natural stone of any real value deserves a setting that holds it securely.

What a dated quote should contain

Because we price from live availability rather than a fixed catalogue, a quote is a snapshot rather than a standing figure. A useful one identifies the exact stone: carat weight to two decimal places, the millimetre measurements, all four grades, the issuing laboratory and report number, treatment status, fluorescence and origin. It should also separate the stone from the mount, so you can see what each is costing.

If a quote gives you one figure and a carat weight, ask for it to be broken down. Two stones that both answer to the same carat weight can differ substantially, and a quote that does not identify which stone it refers to cannot be compared with anything.

For a natural stone, two lines on the report matter beyond the grades. Origin must state that the diamond is natural — this cannot be confirmed by eye or by a handheld tester, since a laboratory-grown diamond is diamond and passes those. How to compare quotes without comparing unlike-for-like

Nearly every unexplained price gap between two quotes is a specification gap. Line these up before concluding one is expensive:

  1. Origin — natural or laboratory-grown, stated explicitly rather than implied.
  2. All four grades, not just the carat weight. A quote giving only weight cannot be compared with anything.
  3. The issuing laboratory and report type — identical letters from different laboratories do not mean the same thing or carry the same price.
  4. Millimetre measurements — a deep-cut stone looks smaller for the same weight.
  5. Treatment status and fluorescence — both appear on the report and both move the price.
  6. What the quote includes — sizing, the report itself, an insurance valuation, any aftercare.
  7. The date of the quote, since availability and metal rates both move.
