How carat, cut, colour and clarity affect cost

The four characteristics are defined on the scales set out in GIA’s grading methodology. Each behaves differently on price.

Carat: priced in steps, not on a curve

Price per carat jumps at the psychologically significant weights, because demand clusters there. A stone fractionally below one of those thresholds sits in the cheaper band while being a fraction of a millimetre narrower — a difference no one detects on a hand. Colour: price it with the metal in mind

Cost climbs steeply toward D. But a stone a grade or two warmer looks entirely white set in yellow or rose gold, because the metal warms the perception regardless. Deciding metal and colour grade together rather than separately routinely frees budget with no visible cost.

Clarity: eye-clean is the threshold

Above the point where inclusions need magnification to find, further clarity spend buys paperwork rather than appearance. Fluorescence, treatment and the grades that are not in the headline

Two further entries on the report move price without appearing among the headline four grades, and both are worth asking about directly. Fluorescence is the stone’s reaction under ultraviolet light. In the great majority of diamonds it is not visible in ordinary daylight, and a faint or medium degree is not a defect — but it is priced in, which occasionally makes a fluorescent stone a genuine bargain for a buyer who does not mind it. Treatment is the more consequential of the two. Some diamonds are processed after cutting to improve apparent clarity or colour, through fracture filling, laser drilling or colour treatment. These are entirely legitimate when disclosed, and they should be recorded on the report — but a treated stone and an untreated stone showing the same grades are not the same purchase and should not carry the same price. If a quote looks unusually low for its stated grades, treatment status is one of the first things to check.

Why millimetres matter more than carats

Carat is a unit of weight, not of size, and the gap between the two is where a surprising amount of money is won or lost. A stone cut deep to retain weight from the original rough will weigh more and look smaller from above; a well-proportioned stone of lower weight can face up wider and brighter. Since what anyone actually sees is the diameter across the top, ask for the millimetre measurements alongside the carat weight on every stone you are quoted. Natural vs lab-grown price differences where relevant

This is the largest fork in diamond pricing. Natural and laboratory-grown stones are the same material, graded on the same scales, but they trade in separate markets at very different levels. For any fixed budget, choosing laboratory-grown generally reaches a larger stone, stronger grades, or both.

Three points to hold onto. Laboratory-grown prices have moved substantially as production capacity has expanded, so they are less stable than natural diamond pricing has historically been — a quote from months ago may not reflect today. How to compare quotes without comparing unlike-for-like

Nearly every unexplained price gap between two diamond quotes is a specification gap. Line these up before concluding one is expensive:

  1. Origin — natural or laboratory-grown, stated explicitly, not implied.
  2. All four grades — a quote giving only carat weight is not comparable to anything.
  3. The issuing laboratory and report type — identical letters from different laboratories do not mean the same thing.
  4. Millimetre measurements — two stones of the same weight can differ visibly in spread.
  5. Treatment status — treated and untreated stones should not be the same price.
  6. Fluorescence — noted on the report and reflected in the price.
  7. The date of the quote — availability and market levels both move.
