Oval Diamonds: buyer checklist

The oval is the most popular fancy shape in the world, and the reasoning behind that is sound rather than fashionable. It is brilliant-faceted, so it sparkles like a round. It is elongated, so it looks larger than a round of the same weight and lengthens the finger. It costs less per carat than a round. And it has no points or sharp corners, so it is durable enough for daily wear without special protection.

Very few shapes offer that combination. The catch is that ovals vary enormously in quality, and the two things that separate a beautiful oval from a mediocre one — ratio and bow-tie — appear nowhere on a grading report.

  1. Decide your length-to-width ratio before you look at any stones.
  2. View every candidate face-up in normal light and assess the bow-tie.
  3. Compare millimetre spread rather than carat weight.
  4. Check for colour gathering at the ends, especially for white metal.
  5. Check the plot for anything under the centre of the table.
  6. Think about how the stone will pair with a wedding band.

The main options to compare

Length-to-width ratio

Ovals are commonly cut anywhere from about 1.30 to 1.50 in ratio, and the difference between the ends of that range is visible immediately. A lower ratio — nearer 1.30 — gives a rounder, fuller oval that reads generously across the finger and looks closer to a round brilliant. A higher ratio — nearer 1.50 — gives a longer, slimmer, more elegant outline with a stronger elongating effect on the hand.

Neither is better and neither is a quality measure. But it is the first thing to settle, because a stone in the ratio you did not want will never look right no matter how good its grades are. Work it out from the measurements on the report — length divided by width — and ask for stones in your preferred range specifically.

Origin

Natural or laboratory-grown — the largest single influence on price. Both are diamond, graded on identical scales, and origin must be stated on the report. See lab-grown vs natural diamond.

Alternatives worth weighing

If you want even more spread for the weight, the marquise goes further, at the cost of two exposed points. The pear gives similar elongation with one point. If you want the classic and are willing to pay for it, the round. Compare all outlines at diamond shapes.

The bow-tie — the single most important check

A bow-tie is a dark band across the middle of an elongated stone, shaped roughly like its name. It happens because the pavilion facets at the centre of a long stone shadow light back toward the viewer’s own head, so that area returns less light than the rest of the stone.

Every oval has one to some degree. In a well-proportioned stone it is faint, shifts as the stone moves, and is barely noticeable. In a poorly proportioned stone it is a permanent dark stripe through the centre that dulls the whole diamond.

No laboratory grades it and it appears on no report. Two ovals with identical grades, identical measurements and identical polish and symmetry can look completely different because of it. The only assessment is your own eyes, face-up, at arm’s length, in ordinary light rather than under a jeweller’s lamp. Face-up size

The oval’s central advantage is spread — more visible stone per carat than a round. That advantage is entirely lost if the stone is cut deep to hold weight below the girdle. Ask for millimetre measurements on every candidate and compare those rather than carat weights. Check the depth percentage on the report too; an unusually high figure means you are paying for weight you cannot see.

Colour at the ends

Elongated shapes concentrate body colour at their tips, because light travels further through the stone along its length. A grade that reads perfectly white in a round can show a faint warmth at the ends of an oval. This matters if you are setting in platinum or white gold; in yellow or rose gold it is irrelevant and you should take the saving. See diamond colour guide.

Clarity, and where it can hide

Ovals are forgiving on clarity. The brilliant faceting breaks light up and disguises small inclusions well, so an eye-clean stone is achievable comfortably down the scale. Ask for the plotted diagram and check nothing sits directly under the centre of the table, where the eye rests. Inclusions nearer the ends are usually well hidden and can often be covered by a prong.

Setting fit

Worth thinking about at the stone stage rather than later. A long oval set north-south along the finger may not sit flush against a straight wedding band, so a shaped band may be needed. A lower ratio, or an east-west orientation, avoids the problem. Deciding the ratio with this in mind can save a later expense.

Price and budget considerations

  • Ovals cost less per carat than rounds and look larger for the weight — two savings that compound. This is the shape’s core financial argument.
  • Diamond origin — the largest lever available in any shape.
  • Carat thresholds — buying just under a round weight remains the most reliable saving in diamond buying.
  • Clarity — the easiest grade to reduce in this shape, subject to checking the centre of the plot.
  • Colour — hold a grade higher for white metal, or drop it deliberately and pair with warm metal.
  • Bow-tie quality is where not to economise. A cheap oval is very often cheap because it has a heavy bow-tie or is cut deep. Both are permanent, and neither shows on paper.

Certification, documentation and trust checks

Ovals are graded on the four characteristics in GIA’s grading methodology, with report types described in GIA’s guide to report types.

  1. There is no overall cut grade for ovals. Expect polish, symmetry and proportion figures instead of a single letter, and read the depth and table percentages rather than looking for a grade.
  2. Verify the report number on the issuing laboratory’s own database rather than trusting a printed sheet, and check the measurements match the stone.
  3. Read the origin and treatment lines — natural or laboratory-grown, and any clarity or colour treatment.
  4. Note the issuing laboratory. Grading strictness varies, so identical letters from different laboratories are not equivalent and are not priced the same.
  5. Remember the report’s limits. It will not tell you the bow-tie strength or how the stone looks face-up. Those are yours to judge. See diamond certificate explained.

How to assess a bow-tie properly

Because this is the check no report covers, do it methodically. Hold the stone face-up at arm’s length in ordinary indoor light rather than under a jeweller’s lamp, which floods the stone and conceals the effect. Compare the brightness at the centre of the oval with the areas toward each end.

Then tilt the stone. In a well-proportioned oval the shadow shifts and dissolves as the angle changes. In a poorly proportioned one it stays fixed, because it is a consequence of the pavilion geometry rather than a passing reflection — and it will look exactly the same on a hand every day.

Comparing two ovals side by side makes the assessment far easier than judging one alone. Look at both centres together and the difference is usually obvious within seconds.

Why ovals vary so much

The underlying reason is that there is no agreed ideal proportion set for an oval the way there is for a round brilliant. A cutter working a round has a well-established target to aim at, and laboratories grade against it. A cutter working an oval is balancing spread, brightness, weight retention and ratio with far more latitude — so the quality range in production is genuinely wider. That is why two ovals with identical grades can look so different, and why looking at the stone matters more in this shape than in a round.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying an oval sight unseen. The bow-tie is not on the report, and it is the difference between a bright stone and a dull one.
  • Not deciding the ratio first, and simply accepting whatever is offered.
  • Comparing carats instead of millimetres, and losing the shape’s main advantage to a deep cut.
  • Assuming polish and symmetry grades predict beauty. They describe finish, not light performance. An oval can grade excellent on both and still show a heavy bow-tie.
  • Overlooking colour at the ends when setting in white metal.
  • Leaving the wedding band question until after the ring is made.
