The oval is the most-requested fancy shape, and pairing it with laboratory-grown material is one of the most efficient combinations available to a buyer who wants visible size.

The two effects compound. An oval faces up larger than a round brilliant of the same carat weight, because the weight is spread along a longer axis. Laboratory-grown material then lets that weight be bought at a specification most buyers would not otherwise reach. The result is a ring that reads considerably larger than the same budget would buy in a round natural stone.

The stone is diamond — the same crystal structure, hardness and optical properties as a mined one, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories, with its origin disclosed on the report.

  • Solitaire — the most common choice, where the outline does the work.
  • Hidden halo — small stones beneath the centre, adding light from the side without changing the oval outline.

What to compare: length-to-width ratio, bow-tie visibility, face-up size and setting fit

Length-to-width ratio. This changes an oval more than carat weight does, and it is not on most buyers’ radar until they see two side by side. A 1.30 reads full and soft; a 1.50 reads long and dramatic. Neither is correct. Look at two or three before choosing, because the difference on the hand is much larger than the numbers suggest.

Bow-tie visibility. Nearly every oval shows some darkness across the centre where light is not returned. A faint bow-tie is normal and does not detract from the stone. A strong, dark one is a cut fault — and it appears on no report, carries no grade, and will not be flagged to you. Look at the stone face-up in ordinary room lighting, not under a jeweller’s spotlights, which wash it out. This is the single most useful check on any oval.

Face-up size. This is the oval’s main argument. Compare millimetre measurements rather than carat weight when you are shopping, because that is what determines how large the stone looks. Two ovals of identical weight can differ meaningfully in face-up dimensions depending on how deep they are cut — a deep oval hides weight below the girdle where nobody sees it.

Setting fit. An oval must sit square to the shank. Even slightly off-axis, it reads crooked on the finger, and it is one of the first things other people notice. Check it on the hand rather than in the tray. Consider too how a wedding band will sit alongside: a low-set oval takes a straight band easily, while a high setting may need a shaped one.

Diamond quality and grading considerations

Cut is the grade that determines whether a diamond looks alive. A well-cut stone returns light through the table; a poorly cut one of identical weight and grades looks dull and can appear smaller. It is graded on round brilliants; on fancy shapes there is no overall cut grade, so proportions must be judged visually.

Colour runs D to Z. The practical question is not which grade is highest but at what point tint becomes visible in your chosen shape and metal. Warm metals hide more; white metals expose more; larger stones show more.

Clarity describes inclusions. In a brilliant cut, features that need magnification to find are unlikely to be seen in wear, and paying beyond eye-clean buys a number. Step cuts are the exception and need higher grades.

Carat is weight, not size. Prices step up sharply at round weights, so a stone just under a milestone can look identical to one just over it while sitting in a different bracket.

Specific to ovals in laboratory-grown material: no overall cut grade is issued for ovals, so the report will not tell you whether the stone is well cut — judge the bow-tie and the measurements yourself. Ask also whether the stone received post-growth HPHT processing to improve colour, which is common in CVD material and must be disclosed on the report.

Price factors and budget trade-offs

  • Millimetre spread rather than weight — two ovals of the same carat weight can differ in face-up size, and that is what you are really buying.
  • Post-growth treatment — disclosed on the report, and a fair subject for a question about price.
