The Pink Star Diamond Ring

The Pink Star Diamond Ring is renowned as the world’s most expensive ring, having sold for a record-breaking $71.2 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction in April 2017[1][7][8]. Mounted on a platinum band, the ring’s centerpiece is a remarkable 59.60-carat oval mixed-cut, Fancy Vivid Pink, Internally Flawless diamond—unmatched in size, color, and purity among natural pink diamonds[2][7].

The diamond was originally discovered by De Beers in Africa in 1999 as a rough stone weighing 132.5 carats. Over two years, it was skillfully cut and polished by the Steinmetz Group, resulting in an extraordinary gemstone with exceptional brilliance and rarity. When first unveiled in 2003, it was known as the “Steinmetz Pink”[1][7].

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) graded the Pink Star as a Fancy Vivid Pink diamond, its highest color grade for pink diamonds. The combination of vivid color and flawless clarity is exceedingly rare; fewer than 2% of all diamonds display any pink hue, and even fewer do so at this level and size[2][7].

The Pink Star Diamond has a volatile auction history. At its first major auction appearance in 2013 at Sotheby’s Geneva, it sold for $83 million, but the buyer defaulted. The diamond returned to Sotheby’s and was successfully auctioned in 2017 to Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, who renamed it the CTF Pink Star[1][5].

Its sale established multiple records, including:

  • The most expensive diamond or jewel ever sold at auction
  • The largest Flawless or Internally Flawless, Fancy Vivid Pink natural color diamond graded by GIA
  • A price per carat among the highest ever achieved for any gemstone
