Pink diamonds sit in two entirely separate price worlds, and confusing them is the most consequential error a buyer can make in this category.
Natural pink diamonds are among the rarest and most valuable gemstones in existence, and their scarcity increased further after the closure of the mine that had supplied the majority of the world’s supply. A natural pink of appreciable size and saturation is a serious purchase and does not appear in ordinary retail. Treated and laboratory-grown pinks deliver the same visual effect at a small fraction of that.
Both are legitimate purchases. Neither is a problem provided you are told which you are buying. So the pricing answer is: establish colour origin in writing before any figure is discussed, because it changes the number by orders of magnitude rather than percentages.
Price ranges and what changes the price
These are the variables that set the price of a pink diamond, ranked by impact.

The first row does most of the work. Every other variable on that list operates within whichever market the first one puts you in.
How carat, cut, colour and clarity affect cost
The four characteristics are graded on the scales in GIA’s grading methodology, with report types described in GIA’s guide to report types. At this specification each behaves in a particular way.
Colour is the price
Fancy coloured diamonds are graded by hue, tone and saturation rather than on the D-to-Z scale used for white stones. In pink the colour is generally attributed to distortions in the crystal lattice rather than to a chemical impurity, which is part of why it is so uncommon. A report grading colour D to Z is not describing a fancy colour — that is a white diamond with a faint tint, which is a different and far less valuable thing.
Carat: steeper than for white stones
For natural pinks the carat curve is extraordinarily steep, because stones of size barely exist — most natural pinks are well under a carat. For treated and laboratory-grown pinks the curve behaves much more like the ordinary market, so larger stones are realistic.
Cut: judged on colour, not brilliance
A pink diamond is cut to maximise the appearance of colour rather than light return. Cushion, radiant and oval outlines concentrate and return colour far better than a round brilliant, which is engineered to return white light and tends to make a coloured stone look paler. Proportions that would be marked down in a white diamond are frequently correct here.
Clarity: much less relevant
Inclusions are considerably harder to see through saturated colour than in a colourless stone, so paying for high clarity grades in a fancy colour delivers very little. The money belongs in saturation instead, which is what actually drives both appearance and value.
Natural vs lab-grown price differences where relevant
There are four distinct products sold as pink diamonds and the price differences between them are enormous. A natural pink has colour present as formed and requires a report from a recognised laboratory confirming natural colour origin. A treated pink is a natural diamond irradiated and heat-treated after cutting — legitimate, disclosed, and vastly more affordable. A laboratory-grown pink is genuine diamond, grown and usually treated for colour, and must be disclosed as laboratory-grown. A pink simulant such as pink sapphire, morganite or pink cubic zirconia is not a diamond at all. Ask two separate questions, because they have separate answers: is the stone natural or laboratory-grown, and is the colour natural or treated? A natural diamond can carry treated colour, and in this category it usually does.
Setting, metal and design costs
With a treated or laboratory-grown pink centre, the mount frequently accounts for the larger share of the quote.
- Metal type and mass. Platinum is denser than gold, so an identical design needs more of it by weight. 18ct contains more gold than 9ct.
- Accent stones. Halo, pavé and channel designs add many small diamonds, each hand-set.
- Bench hours. A plain solitaire is the leanest build; engraving, milgrain and bespoke geometry all add time.
- Finger size — a larger shank uses more metal, a small but real factor.
A white halo around a pink centre is functional rather than merely decorative — the contrast sharpens the perceived pink, so a lighter and cheaper stone reads considerably more saturated. Rose gold does the same job through the metal. Both are legitimate ways to get more apparent colour for less, and using pink stones as accents around a white centre is the most affordable route of all.
What a dated quote should contain
Because we price from live availability rather than a fixed catalogue, a quote is a snapshot rather than a standing figure. A useful one identifies the exact stone: carat weight to two decimal places, the millimetre measurements, all four grades, the issuing laboratory and report number, treatment status, fluorescence and origin. It should also separate the stone from the mount, so you can see what each is costing.
If a quote gives you one figure and a carat weight, ask for it to be broken down. Two stones that both answer to the same carat weight can differ substantially, and a quote that does not identify which stone it refers to cannot be compared with anything.

How to compare quotes without comparing unlike-for-like
Nearly every unexplained price gap between two quotes is a specification gap. Line these up before concluding one is expensive:
- Origin — natural or laboratory-grown, stated explicitly rather than implied.
- All four grades, not just the carat weight. A quote giving only weight cannot be compared with anything.
- The issuing laboratory and report type — identical letters from different laboratories do not mean the same thing or carry the same price.
- Millimetre measurements — a deep-cut stone looks smaller for the same weight.
- Treatment status and fluorescence — both appear on the report and both move the price.
- What the quote includes — sizing, the report itself, an insurance valuation, any aftercare.
- The date of the quote, since availability and metal rates both move.
A pink diamond quoted at a price comparable to ordinary jewellery is a treated or laboratory-grown stone. That is entirely fine — but the paperwork should say so, and a seller who is vague about colour origin is the problem regardless of what the stone turns out to be.
