A 0.7 carat diamond has no single price, but this is one of the most deliberately chosen weights on the scale — and understanding why is most of what you need to know about pricing it.

Diamond prices do not rise smoothly with weight. They step up at round and half-carat marks, where buyer demand concentrates and sellers can command a premium. A 0.70ct stone sits below the 0.75ct and 1.00ct steps, which means you are paying for the diamond rather than for a milestone figure.

The visible difference between 0.70ct and a stone just over the next threshold is small. The difference on the invoice is not. That is the whole argument for this weight, and it is a good one.

Band width is an underrated lever at this weight and it costs nothing. A narrower shank makes the centre stone read larger by contrast alone, without adding a single point of carat weight. It is the simplest adjustment available here.

How carat, cut, colour and clarity affect cost

The four characteristics are graded on the scales in GIA’s grading methodology, with report types described in GIA’s guide to report types. At this specification each behaves in a particular way.

Carat

0.70ct is chosen precisely to avoid the premium attached to the next threshold up. Prices step at round and half-carat weights, and stones sitting just below a step are bought more efficiently. Cut

This is where the budget should go at 0.7 carats. A well-cut stone is bright and lively and can look larger than its weight; a poorly cut one of identical grades looks flat and small. Below a carat there is little else to distract the eye, so cut is doing nearly all the work. Insist on the cut grade on round brilliants and do not trade it away for anything.

Colour

Forgiving at this size. Body colour becomes more visible as stones get larger, and 0.7 carats is small enough that grades some way down the D-to-Z scale read as white in wear — particularly in yellow or rose gold, which reflects warmth into the stone anyway. This is usually the easiest grade to economise on here.

Clarity

Equally forgiving in a brilliant cut. An inclusion that needs magnification to find at this weight will not be noticed by anyone in ordinary wear, and paying for grades beyond eye-clean buys a letter on a report rather than a visible difference. The choice between a natural and a laboratory-grown diamond is the largest single variable in the price at 0.7 carats, larger than any individual grade. A laboratory-grown stone is a real diamond — same crystal structure, same hardness, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories — with its origin stated explicitly on the report.

  • Metal type and mass. Platinum is denser than gold, so an identical design needs more of it by weight. 18ct contains more gold than 9ct.
  • Accent stones. Halo, pavé and channel designs add many small diamonds, each hand-set.
  • Bench hours. A plain solitaire is the leanest build; engraving, milgrain and bespoke geometry all add time.
  • Finger size — a larger shank uses more metal, a small but real factor.

If the budget is tight, a simpler setting well made in a good metal will serve better over decades than an elaborate one that is lightly constructed. Construction quality outlasts decoration, and at this weight the difference in cost between the two is real.

What a dated quote should contain

Because we price from live availability rather than a fixed catalogue, a quote is a snapshot rather than a standing figure. A useful one identifies the exact stone: carat weight to two decimal places, the millimetre measurements, all four grades, the issuing laboratory and report number, treatment status, fluorescence and origin. It should also separate the stone from the mount, so you can see what each is costing.

If a quote gives you one figure and a carat weight, ask for it to be broken down. Two stones that both answer to the same carat weight can differ substantially, and a quote that does not identify which stone it refers to cannot be compared with anything.

How to compare quotes without comparing unlike-for-like

Nearly every unexplained price gap between two quotes is a specification gap. Line these up before concluding one is expensive:

  1. Origin — natural or laboratory-grown, stated explicitly rather than implied.
  2. All four grades, not just the carat weight. A quote giving only weight cannot be compared with anything.
  3. The issuing laboratory and report type — identical letters from different laboratories do not mean the same thing or carry the same price.
  4. Millimetre measurements — a deep-cut stone looks smaller for the same weight.
  5. Treatment status and fluorescence — both appear on the report and both move the price.
  6. What the quote includes — sizing, the report itself, an insurance valuation, any aftercare.
  7. The date of the quote, since availability and metal rates both move.

A cheaper quote at 0.7 carats has usually left out certification, accepted a lower cut grade, or is quoting a stone at a different exact weight. Ask for the report, the cut grade and the weight to two decimal places before concluding anything.
